Quote from Putin: "As for my statement that, in my view, the matter [of war – ed.] is approaching its conclusion. I did not make that statement lightly, but based on an analysis of the situation on the battlefield, where our troops are advancing in all directions. You can see it yourselves – every day."
Details: However, Putin said he cannot speak about a timeline for the end of the war while military operations are ongoing.
Background:
- On 9 May, Putin stated that he is ready to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a third country, but only to sign a final agreement ending the war. Meanwhile, he claimed that "the Ukrainian conflict is moving towards an end".
- On 12 May, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained Putin's remarks about the alleged approaching end of the war against Ukraine by referring to "progress" in the peace process and US mediation efforts, though he gave no specific timeline.
