Police investigate fatal shooting of homeless man in City Heights

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- One person was fatally shot late Tuesday night in an alley in City Heights, authorities said.

San Diego police officers responded to reports of gunshots being fired near 43rd Street and Polk Avenue around 11:55 p.m.

Officers found a man, who was believed to be homeless, suffering from at least one gunshot wound in the west alley of 43rd Street between University and Polk avenues.

The victim was taken to a hospital, but later died from his injuries, authorities said. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

According to homicide detectives who investigated the scene, the man appeared to have been involved in an altercation with another man in the alley prior to the shooting.

A person of interest was detained and released after being interviewed by detectives, SDPD said.

The investigation into the fatal shooting is ongoing. Detectives will continue processing evidence, interviewing witnesses and searching for security footage.
