ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- A man riding an electric motorcycle died Thursday afternoon after crashing into a police vehicle during a pursuit in Escondido, authorities confirmed.

According to the Escondido Police Department (EPD), the incident began around the area of Valley Parkway and Rose Street, where an Escondido police officer attempted to stop the motorcyclist. When the rider failed to yield, officers initiated a pursuit.

The chase continued onto a bike path along the flood control channel that runs east and west between Valley Parkway and Washington Avenue, police said. The fatal collision occurred east of Midway Drive, where the motorcyclist collided with a police vehicle.

Due to the involvement of an EPD vehicle in the crash, the Oceanside Police Department (OPD) is leading the investigation under a mutual agreement, officials explained.

The identity of the deceased rider has not yet been released.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information to contact OPD Traffic Investigator Ibrahim Serdah at 760-435-4769.
