Poland plans to build its own drone wall

Poland intends to begin developing a national anti-drone system within the next few months, without waiting for the European Union's drone wall initiative to be implemented.

Quote from Tomczyk: "We agree with the idea of strengthening the defence of the skies over the entire European Union and are willing to consider external proposals or solutions. But we give priority to national projects."

Details: Tomczyk said in November, the ministry will announce investments in technologies for detecting, jamming and neutralising hostile drones as part of a broader air defence programme.

He did not specify the amount of investment but said the goal was for Polish companies to receive at least half of the contracts.

Tomczyk stressed that the EU's drone wall could "complement" Poland's system in the future.

He added that the ministry plans to use the EU's new SAFE defence credit programme to finance the country's anti-drone shield but declined to give further details.

Bloomberg noted that, given Poland's borders with Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, it had received the largest initial allocation under the SAFE programme – €43.7 billion.

The government wants the first new elements of the anti-drone system to become operational within three months after the announcement, with the entire system fully functional within two years.

"A counter-drone weapon must be comprehensive. It should consist of various sensors and effectors operating simultaneously, first detecting and identifying objects, and then neutralising them," Tomczyk said.

He added that the new anti-drone initiatives would become "another layer" of the country's air defence network, alongside already deployed long- and medium-range systems.
