PHOTOS: Harvest Moon, first supermoon of 2025, rises over California
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The moon appeared larger and brighter in the night sky over California Monday night during the first supermoon event of the year.
A supermoon is a full moon that is at its closest point in its orbit around Earth.
October's supermoon occurs the closest to the start of the autumnal equinox. It was named the Harvest Moon because farmers needed the moonlight to harvest their crops into the night.
People in San Diego County could see the Harvest Moon shining bright in the night sky on Monday. See the dazzling photos below sent to FOX 5/KUSI by viewers.
The next supermoon will rise over San Diego County on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 5:19 a.m.
