Pentagon just deployed Ukrainian anti-drone system at Saudi air base — less than month after Trump said Ukrainian help wasn’t needed
The US military has begun using Ukrainian anti-drone technology at a key base in Saudi Arabia following a series of Iranian drone and missile attacks. The system in question is the “Sky Map” platform, deployed at Prince Sultan Air Base, Reuters reports.
When drones break through defenses
The system’s deployment came in response to a series of Iranian drone and missile strikes on the base, which destroyed aircraft and infrastructure and resulted in at least one military fatality.
According to sources, these attacks triggered the accelerated adoption of Ukrainian technology.

The Sky Map platform is used to detect aerial threats, including Iranian Shahed-type drones, and coordinate their interception. It fuses radar and sensor data into a unified air operations management system.
In effect, the system creates an integrated “sky map” that enables rapid identification and tracking of targets.
Weak spots that cannot be ignored
Analysts say the situation highlights systemic gaps in the US defense against drones.
“There's been longstanding gaps in US air missile defense coverage around the world. This has been well understood. However, it hasn't been addressed,” said Timothy Walton, a senior fellow at the Washington-based Hurldwide.
Ukrainian engineers entering US defense
The rollout of Ukrainian technology occurred less than a month after US leader Donald Trump stated that Ukraine’s assistance in drone defense was not needed.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon is increasing funding for counter-drone systems, allocating $350 million to strengthen defenses. However, US officials acknowledge that fully eliminating the drone threat is impossible.
Sky Fortress was founded in 2022 by Ukrainian engineers supported by the Brave1 defense initiative, and its system is already being used as a key platform for air threat management.
Separately, other systems are being tested at the base, including Merops interceptors and Coyote systems. However, during trials, incidents occurred, including one interceptor drone losing control and crashing into infrastructure.
