Peanut the turtle turns 41 years old

ST. LOUIS - It’s another trip around the sun for this active turtle with a figure-eight shape.

Peanut, the turtle, is turning 41. Peanut overcame adversity, as her figure was the consequence of littering, trapping her in a plastic ring.

The Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center is holding a birthday shell-a-bration Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Visitors can hear about this turtle’s story: caught in a six-pack ring, found by conservationists.

“A Six pack ring from sodas or drinks,” said Matthew Cavanaugh, Naturalist, Missouri Department of Conservation. “They found this wrapped around her shell. That was on her shell for five years before we found her, in our estimation.”

Since coming to the Missouri Department of Conservation in 1993 she’s served as a spokes-turtle in front of thousands, showcasing this visual reminder of man’s creation, not disposed of properly and the life-altering results in nature.

“The odds of a red-eared slider naturally just after birth hatching from the eggs,” Cavanaugh said. “Its odds of living are already 1,000 to one. So the fact that Peanut has lived through that 1,000 to one and six-pack rings. She’s had surgery. She’s been traveling and she’s made it up to 41 years. In the wild, they can last 45 years, up to 50 in captivity. For her to make it as far as she has is absolutely incredible.”

They’ll be showcasing Peanut’s “No MO Waste” message at her home in Powder Valley on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Not birthday cake,” Cavanaugh said. “We’ll be giving her some nice, tasty worms.  We’re going to give her a little piece of shrimp. And we’re thinking of a little piece of strawberry. She got strawberries last year and she loved them.”
