Peak bloom dates announced for DC's cherry blossoms

Spring is in the air — and the cherry blossom trees near Washington's National Mall are expected to reach peak bloom in a matter of weeks.

Peak bloom for the cherry blossoms will fall between March 28 and 31 this year, the National Park Service (NPS) announced Thursday.

Peak bloom is considered when 70 percent of the Yoshino cherry blossoms are open, according to the NPS. The blooming bonanza typically lasts for several days, depending on the weather.

This year's dates are slightly later than last year's predicted peak; in 2024, the famed pink and white trees, which were gifted to the U.S. by Japan in 1912, were expected to bloom March 23 to 26.

"Extraordinary warm or cool temperatures" have led peak bloom to arrive as early as March 15 in 1990 and as late as April 18 in 1958, the government agency said.
