Patient steals ambulance, crashes it: Deputies
MADISON COUNTY, Ill. - A Cahokia Heights man is facing serious charges after he allegedly stole an ambulance in Granite City, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say that Montez Williams—who was a patient inside a MedStar Ambulance—drove off with the vehicle after first responders arrived at Gateway Regional Medical Center.
According to an arrest warrant, Williams drove the ambulance through multiple communities during the police pursuit but ultimately crashed the vehicle in an attempt to avoid spike strips.
Law enforcement say Williams, 36, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. During his treatment, officials say the 36-year-old was “very” combative and allegedly spat at nurses, as well as battered a police officer and security guard.
Tom Haine, Madison County State’s Attorney, charged Williams with the following charges:
- 2X of Aggravated Battery
- 2X of Aggravated Fleeing/Attempting to Elude a Police Officer
Williams remains in custody at the Madison County Jail.
