Palomar College's Water Technology program doused with handsome grant

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (FOX5/KUSI)-- The Water Technology Education program at Palomar College is receiving a little help from its friends on the national level to support water technician and training programs at the college.

The college announced Wednesday that it received a $471,000 Advanced Technological Education (ATE) grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), which will go towards its Tomorrow’s Water Technicians Project over the next three years.

The project aims to develop and test new approaches related to water technician education and training.

According to officials at Palomar College, Tomorrow’s Water Technicians Project, "seeks to build a pipeline of skilled workers ready to support public health and environmental sustainability by addressing the critical needs of communities across the nation, including aging infrastructure, limited water resources and an aging workforce."

The ATE grant is partnered with the San Diego County Water Authority, Vallecitos Water District and several other water agencies throughout the county.

Local careers in the water technology field are in demand now more than ever, as pollution and contamination from the Tijuana River Sewage crisis have plagued the beaches and of South Bay San Diego for years.

The Water Technology Program at Palomar College is a two-year program that allows students to earn a Certificate or Associate Degree in Water or Wastewater Technology.
