Padres fall to Cubs in Game 1 of NL Wild Card Series

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The Chicago Cubs defeated the San Diego Padres in a 3-1 victory in Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series on Tuesday afternoon in the Windy City.

Center fielder Jackson Merrill scored the Padres' lone run in the second inning, while the Pads' starting pitcher Nick Pivetta tossed nine strikeouts on the day.

Cubs right fielder Seiya Suzuki and catcher Carson Kelly belted back-to-back homers in the fifth inning, and shortstop Dansby Swanson supplied the third and final run in the bottom of the eighth.

Game 2 of the NL Wild Card is slated for Wednesday at noon in Chicago.
