Orbán says "energy crisis" looming over EU and demands lifting of sanctions against Russia

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has said the European Union must lift sanctions and restrictions imposed on Russian energy, warning that an energy crisis is looming over Europe.

Details: Orbán said he spoke with his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico on 4 April because "the situation in Europe is critical".

Quote: "A serious energy crisis is approaching and is gathering pace with each passing day. The European economy is threatened by a shortage of energy resources and, as a result, rising prices."

More details: Orbán claimed that the danger is inevitable and that the only way to avert it is for the European Union to replenish its oil and gas reserves from every possible source, in the largest possible volumes and as quickly as possible.

Quote: "Every day matters. That is why we demand that Brussels immediately lift the sanctions and restrictions imposed on Russian energy."

More details: Orbán also said yet again that "Brussels must force President Zelenskyy to reopen the Druzhba oil pipeline immediately".

Quote: "And those plans that propose abandoning Russian energy resources and switching to Brussels' energy policy, which is more expensive and unaffordable for families, must be rejected and cast aside."

Background: On 19 March, Orbán said Hungary will not unblock any decision favourable to Ukraine until the flow of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline is restored.
