Oceanside High School graduate returns home to fly in Miramar Air Show

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The Miramar Air Show was back in action on Friday, and for one pilot, it was more than just a performance, it’s a homecoming.

Capt. Kevin Williams, a graduate of Oceanside High School, took to the skies as an F-18 pilot Saturday, with students and his former teacher from the high school cheering him on.

Shawndra Faist, who leads the Academy of Justice at Oceanside High, called the moment full circle.

“We are at the Miramar Air Show, we have one of our graduates, Capt. Kevin Williams, flying in the show today,” she said. “I feel like a proud mom. I couldn’t stop smiling, watching him take off and fly by. It was a great experience.”

Williams graduated from Oceanside High in 2012. For the students in attendance, like Myken Taylor, meeting him was inspiring.

“It makes me feel like I can achieve what I want and go even further,” he said. “I want to join municipal police, but who knows, maybe the FBI if I really wanted to.”

For both Williams and the students, the day was about more than jets in the sky. It was a reminder of roots, pride and the possibilities ahead.

The meet-and-greet took place at the F-18 static display during the air show, which runs through the weekend.
