NYC's The Halal Guys announce opening date of first San Diego location
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- After years of delays and setbacks, a popular street food franchise from New York City announced it will finally be coming to San Diego.
The Halal Guys, known for its famous rice platters with the customer's choice of chicken, gyro and falafel, said it will officially open soon in Hillcrest.
Aside from its rice platters, it also offers warm pita bread sandwiches filled with meat of choice, lettuce, tomatoes, additional toppings and the signature white and hot sauce.
The Halal Guys came from humble beginnings as a street food cart operated by three Egyptians in New York City in 1990. The business initially started as a hot dog cart but eventually began selling halal food to Muslim taxi drivers who had few dining options in NYC at the time.
Over the years, the fast-casual chain grew a dedicated fanbase by word-of-mouth and exploded into global recognition.
Currently, The Halal Guys has over 400 restaurants worldwide, including 14 locations in California.
The Halal Guys will soon open its first San Diego location on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 3825 Fifth Ave. in Hillcrest. The grand opening is set for 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
The first 50 guests to visit during its grand opening day will receive a free small platter.
