North County Transit District urges rail safety after fatal incidents
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The North County Transit District (NCTD) is urging pedestrians and drivers to prioritize rail safety following two fatal train incidents in Carlsbad and Vista this month.
The transit district emphasizes the importance of awareness and adherence to safety rules around railroad tracks to prevent further tragedies. California, which leads the nation in rail-related trespassing casualties, reported 182 deaths last year and over 2,200 rail incidents.
Mary Dover, chief of staff at NCTD emphasized the importance of rail safety awareness to prevent tragedies.
The Carlsbad Village Station is one of the busiest in North County, where many people board the Coaster or Amtrak trains. Amtrak trains can reach speeds of up to 90 miles per hour, posing significant risks to pedestrians crossing the tracks to access nearby shops and restaurants.
Representatives from NCTD are actively reminding the public about rail safety rules. Their efforts aim to reduce the number of incidents and fatalities occurring on or near the tracks.
