Nordstrom exit from St. Louis Galleria disappoints shoppers

RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Mo. – The St. Louis Galleria has lost one of its longtime anchor stores. Nordstrom officially closed its Richmond Heights location on Sunday, ending more than two decades at the popular shopping center.

The closure was first announced in June, when the company said the store would not renew its lease. About 135 employees are affected, though Nordstrom says it is working to help staff transition into other roles within the company.

For many shoppers, today marked the end of an era. Customers stopped by for one last visit, sharing memories of the store’s role in their shopping routines. Some said they will miss the convenience, selection, and amenities Nordstrom offered.

“I can’t believe it. I love Nordstrom,” said longtime customer Coretta Bozeman. Another shopper added, “I heard they were closing so I thought I’d get some good deals here.”

The Galleria will soon see a new tenant in the former Nordstrom space, as Dick’s House of Sport prepares to move in. The mall still retains other anchors, including Macy’s and Dillard’s, but the Nordstrom closure leaves many loyal customers disappointed.

“It’s great, especially as a mom, because they had the nice women’s room. If I needed to nurse or anything, it was always nice,” said one shopper, reflecting on the store’s family-friendly environment.”

The closure is part of a larger restructuring effort by Nordstrom, which has been downsizing its physical presence nationwide. In the St. Louis area, one Nordstrom store remains at West County Center, along with a Nordstrom Rack location.

“I am going to miss this Nordstrom, and St. Louis is definitely going to miss this store in this mall,” Bozeman said.
