New sunset overlook opens in La Jolla
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- San Diego is known for its breathtaking sunsets.
The Brian & Nancy Malk Sunset Overlook off La Jolla Shores Drive in La Jolla is a new place where onlookers can take in nature's beauty.
The University of San Diego last week announced the opening of the site which features a viewing platform, benches, pathways and accessible parking.
The idea for the sunset overlook stemmed from La Jolla Shores residents the Malks who would frequently drive past the location and often see people gathered on the sidewalk or in the backs of trucks to take in the view/sunset, per UC San Diego.
Brian Malk reached out to the campus about his vision of a deck where people of all ages abilities could leisurely and safely enjoy the view.
“UC San Diego’s team enthusiastically embraced the idea,” Malk said. “Making this treasured view accessible for all to enjoy was our mutual goal.”
UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said the school is "grateful to Nancy and Brian Malk for their meaningful gift, which has created a new space for campus and community members to safely and easily enjoy the majestic ocean views that have come to define our university’s spirit.”
Site signage at the location acknowledges the land of the Kumeyaay Nation where UC San Diego is located and the overlook stands, according to the university. The space is also planted with native, drought-tolerant vegetation.
