New bill proposes swimming ban at Rockford Beach Park

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. - New legislation in Jefferson County aims to ban people from swimming at Rockford Beach Park along the Big River in House Springs.

Bill No. 25-09245 would amend park regulations by adding "Subsection U," prohibiting visitors from entry into the Big River for "swimming and/or wading."

The proposed legislation comes months after first responders issued a warning for visitors at the popular swimming location.

As of July 1, the High Ridge Fire Protection District reports at least seven people have drowned in the river since 2014. Additionally, the fire district has responded to more than 60 calls for services at the park. FOX 2 reached out to the High Ridge Fire Protection District for updated statistics on their call for services at the park.

In addition to banning swimming in the river, the county council will take up Bill No. R25-0980, requesting U.S. Senators and Missouri Representatives secure federal funding for projects in the river.

The Jefferson County Council will meet Monday at 6:30 p.m. to take up this and other proposals.
