Neighbors stunned after ATVs take over south city street
ST. LOUIS - A problem many have noticed downtown is now being reported in other areas of St. Louis, too: large groups of people on ATVs and dirt bikes taking over city streets and even invading quiet residential neighborhoods.
One instance caught-on-camera Saturday afternoon in south St. Louis shocked neighbors and garnered attention online.
The video, taken from a neighbor’s front porch on Nottingham Ave., shows a group of people on ATVs and dirt bikes speeding the wrong way down a one-way Southampton street and even doing tricks down the sidewalks.
Neighbors tell FOX 2 they fear something like this could end tragically.
The incident came a day after officers with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) arrested a 24-year-old man from Texas for taking part in a similar ride downtown.
An SLMPD spokesperson said the man was driving a stolen ATV at the time. It also comes after a recent crackdown where several ATVs and dirt bikes were seized.
The department tells FOX 2 that while they take these incidents seriously, chasing these large groups of riders can present a real safety challenge for everyone involved.
So far, no one has been arrested in connection to Saturday’s incident in south St. Louis.
