Musk calls for EU to be abolished after X fined by European Commission

US billionaire Elon Musk has called for the European Union to be "abolished" after the European Commission fined his social media platform X (Twitter).

Quote: "The EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries, so that governments can better represent their people."

Background:

  • On 5 December, the European Commission issued a fine of €120 million to X for breaching its transparency obligations under the Digital Services Act (DSA).
  • The breaches include the deceptive design of its "blue checkmark", the lack of transparency of its advertising repository and the failure to provide access to public data for researchers.
  • Senior US officials sharply criticised the decision, likening the European Commission's actions to "censorship".
  • This is not the first time Musk and the EU have clashed publicly. The billionaire has earlier criticised what he called the "undemocratic" process used to elect the European Commission president.
