Mother detained after SWAT standoff in La Mesa

LA MESA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A mother with a child who was making threats to officers was detained after an hours-long SWAT standoff in La Mesa, authorities said.

Around 1 p.m., authorities received a call for a check up on a one-month-old who was being neglected or abused in the 7500 block of Seton Hall Street, according to Cpt. Katy Lynch with the La Mesa Police Department.

Authorities learned the mother of the baby, who is in a bad mental health crisis, was inside the home with the baby.

Lynch said the mother would not come out of the house and made threats to officers, causing law enforcement to be seriously concerned for the safety of the infant and mother.

A man of unknown relation was also inside the home for a period of time and came out of the house on his own accord, police confirmed.

Authorities eventually were able to detain the mother and the baby is safe.

An officer was also injured and seen being loaded into an ambulance.

Residents in the area were advised to shelter in place.
