MoDOT holds ceremony for start of Route 100 project
ST. LOUIS - The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) held a ceremony Tuesday morning to announce the groundbreaking of a major project along Route 100, also known as Manchester Road.
The ceremony was held at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning near downtown St. Louis, on Chouteau at Ninth Street, across from the Purina building. The new project will run from the location along Manchester Road to the city limits of Maplewood, aiming to improve safety, resurface the roadway, and include the addition of protected bike lanes.
MODOT has stated that this will be the first project on a state-maintained route to include protected bike lanes. The bike lanes will connect to existing cycle tracks established by the City of St. Louis.
To create these lanes, MODOT will install six-inch curb islands between the parking lane and the bike lane, forming a parking-protected bike lane on both sides of the street between 39th Street and Broadway.
The project has been planned since September 2023 and has involved public meetings to gather input from local residents and workers.
MODOT officials have noted that the area has a history of crashes, some involving pedestrians and cyclists, with some incidents being deadly. The hope is that these improvements will enhance safety for all road users.
