Mo. student-athletes move indoors amid heat

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - The excessive heat in the Missouri region means some student-athletes are being forced indoors for practice.

One such school that is looking to beat the heat is the Chaminade College Preparatory School in Frontenac, Missouri. The school's football team did not let the day go to waste.

“One of our school mottoes is ‘adaptation to change,’” said head football coach Antoine Torrey. “So we talked about that immediately when the boys came out; we met with them. This is the day we're going to adapt to change.”

Players completed concussion screening tests, worked out in the weight room and had a compact practice in the school’s gymnasium.

Coach Torrey said outdoor conditions are constantly monitored by Chaminade’s athletic trainer and Anatomy and Physiology instructor, Scott Cugler uses a Wet Bulb Globe Temperature meter to ensure the environment is safe.

“What that measures is ambient temperature, relative humidity, but also the solar radiation from the sunlight,” Cugler said. “Typically for a 3:30 p.m. practice, I'll get out around 2:00 p.m. to do an initial reading on whatever playing surface that we're using.”

Both Torrey and Cugler stressed that all these measures are in place to ensure the youth’s safety.

“Heat-related illnesses are on the rise,” Culger told FOX 2. “We've got to be cognizant of the youth and how we condition them and make sure that we keep their safety at the forefront of whatever we're doing.”

“Their safety is primary number one,” Torrey said. “And we want to make sure we can keep them safe, but yet still get some work done and prepare for our scrimmage this weekend.”
