Man used toy gun to carjack nuns leaving mass: Police

ST. LOUIS – A Wisconsin man already in custody for leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen car faces an added charge for the theft itself.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, the carjacking occurred on Aug. 17 in the 4300 block of Lindell Boulevard, in the Central West End neighborhood.

Police said two nuns had just left mass when Jordan T. Grundy, 25, confronted them with what appeared to be a firearm. Grundy took off in the nuns’ vehicle, a 2016 Ford.

Surveillance cameras recorded the crime.

Police located the stolen car in the area of Jefferson Avenue and Locust Street and pursued Grundy.

During the 10-minute pursuit, police said Grundy ran multiple traffic lights, drove into oncoming traffic, and smashed into a bystander vehicle. Ultimately, Grundy crashed the stolen car into a tree.

Grundy and a passenger attempted to flee on foot but were apprehended, police said.

Police found a toy gun inside the stolen car matching the nuns’ description of the weapon.

Grundy was also wearing the same shoes and shorts as seen on the surveillance video. A green hat and sunglasses worn by the carjacker were also found in the car. Cell phone data showed Grundy was in the area at the time of the carjacking and followed the path of the stolen vehicle.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Grundy with first-degree robbery. He was previously charged with aggravated fleeing, leaving the scene of an accident with physical injury, and resisting arrest.

Grundy remains jailed without bond. He’s due in court for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 17.
