Man shot, killed while breaking into cars in south St. Louis

ST. LOUIS - A man was fatally shot Saturday morning while allegedly breaking into cars in south St. Louis, police say.

The shooting happened around 5 a.m. Saturday in the 3800 block of Tesson Street in St. Louis' Carondelet neighborhood, near Interstate 55 and Grant's Trail.

According to a St. Louis police crime summary report, based on preliminary findings, a witness confronted two people who were reportedly breaking into cars. At some point, the suspects allegedly pulled a firearm, and the witness fired shots at the suspected car thieves.

One alleged car thief was struck by gunfire and died from injuries at the scene.

The other alleged car thief escaped from the scene. No one else was injured.

Homicide detectives responded to the scene, working to gather evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The alleged car thief who was shot and killed has not been identified. One firearm was recovered at the scene.
