ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Medical Examiner’s Office has determined a man found dying near train tracks in Ellendale early Monday morning died of a gunshot wound.

According to Evita Caldwell, a St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman, railroad employees spotted the man around 3 a.m. near Southwest and McCausland avenues and contacted law enforcement.

The man was rushed to the hospital with head trauma and died a short time later, Caldwell said. He was 47.

An autopsy showed the man had suffered a gunshot wound to his face.

Homicide detectives have assumed control of the investigation.
