Man found dead inside home after SWAT standoff in Ramona

RAMONA, Calif. (FOX5/KUSI) -- An hours-long standoff resulted in one person being found dead inside a home in Ramona, authorities said.

Around 9:30 a.m., deputies responded to a welfare check on a man in the 1400 block of Royal Vista Drive, according to Lt. Scott Roller with the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.

When deputies arrived on scene, they contacted the man through an open window, who did not respond and retreated behind a closed door, according to law enforcement.

Deputies left to a safe location and called for backup when they heard what sounded like the racking of a weapon.

Authorities learned the suspect discharged a firearm several times inside the home the night before.

The incident prompted the evacuation of nearby Hanson Elementary School, located in the 2500 block of Boundary Avenue.

Students and staff were taken by school buses to the Ramona Community Montessori School, where parents were able to pick up their children.

Multiple contacts from law enforcement to the man were attempted but he refused to come out, per SDSO.

Around 6:30 p.m., authorities were able to make their way inside the home, discovering an unresponsive man inside a closed-door closet. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed the standoff is over and that there is no threat to the public at this time.
