Man dies after 1 day in custody at San Diego Central Jail
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A 35-year-old man died in Sheriff's custody Saturday afternoon at the San Diego Central Jail.
The man, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of his family, had been in Sheriff’s custody since Friday, and was facing charges for vehicle theft and possession of stolen property. The cause and manner of his death are not yet available, but will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
At around 3:08 p.m. Saturday, multiple inmates informed Sheriff’s Deputies that an individual was in medical distress. Upon arrival, deputies found the 35-year-old unresponsive in his cell and immediately called 9-1-1. Deputies also requested help from the facility's medical staff and began life-saving measures.
Once on the scene, paramedics and the San Diego Fire Department took over life-saving measures before transporting the man to a nearby hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at around 4:31 p.m.
“The San Diego Sheriff's Office extends our sympathies to the decedent's family and all those affected by his passing,” Lieutenant Juan Marquez wrote in a press release sent out late Saturday night.
Following the death, a Sheriff’s Family Liaison will support the deceased’s family. Additionally, the Citizens' Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) has been notified.
The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit is also conducting an investigation to ensure all aspects of the incident are examined, as is the protocol for all in-custody deaths.
