Man accused of throwing asphalt onto car from I-44 overpass

ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis man is in custody for throwing pieces of asphalt from an overpass onto cars traveling on Interstate 44.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, the crime happened on Sunday, Sept. 29, on the Arsenal overpass at I-44.

Police said the victim was driving on the interstate when he heard a noise like something striking his car. He looked up and saw a man up the side of the roadway.

The victim eventually turned around and went back to the spot where his car was hit. He saw the same man standing with his arm raised, holding something in his hand.

Police responded and took Joseph Patzius, 51, into custody at the scene.

According to investigators, officers found asphalt residue in Patzius’ hands and in the area where he was standing. Police also found chunks of asphalt along the nearby median.

The victim’s car sustained a dented hood. Police searched Patzius and discovered he was in possession of methamphetamine.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Patzius with second-degree assault, possession of a controlled substance, and second-degree property damage. Online court records do not show when Patzius will appear in court.

Patzius is only charged in this one incident, but over the past couple of weeks, an SLMPD spokesperson says the department has taken about a dozen calls from people who say something was thrown at their vehicles near the same location on I-44 near the Jamieson overpass.

This is not the first time Patzius has been the subject of a FOX 2 News report. Earlier this month, FOX 2 reported on junk piling up at Patzius' home. FOX 2 returned to his address on Tuesday and found two women leaving the property. When asked if Patzius was throwing rocks at vehicles, one woman said that Patzius was being framed. The suspect's home is just half a mile from the Jamieson overpass.
