Major renovation work underway at Mission Valley mall
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Efforts to revamp the former Westfield Mission Valley shopping mall are now underway.
Visitors may notice construction work being done in several parts of the shopping center, which is located at 1650 Camino del Rio North.
As of Monday, the areas that are fenced off to the public include the former plaza in front of CAVA and Nordstrom Rack near the west entrance of the mall facing Camino De La Reina as well as what used to be the elevator to the parking garage near the AMC movie theater.
Although the exact final plans for those areas remain to be seen, various displays around the construction sites reference a new name for the mall, "The Valley."
Last year, the boutique commercial real estate firm, Retail Insite, proposed turning the mall into a mixed-use retail and residential hub.
The original shopping center was built in the 1960s and was then known as “Westfield Shoppingtown Mission Valley” before shortening its name to just “Westfield Mission Valley.”
The "Westfield" name was dropped in 2023 when Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield sold both of its Mission Valley shopping centers — located on either side of Mission Center Road — to separate buyers for a $290 million deal.

According to the brochure by Retail Insite, "The Valley" would add two new residential structures with 650 units collectively, as well as a central common area, reimagined public spaces and more. The plan also hopes to add a central covered parking connection to the retail promenade.
Tenants like Target, Nordstrom Rack and AMC Theatres as well as Yard House, CAVA and Outback Steakhouse are set to stay.
