Major injuries after motorcycle and SUV collide near Ramona

RAMONA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Two people were seriously injured after being thrown from a motorcycle that collided with an SUV over the weekend in eastern San Diego County.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating after a motorcycle and Honda Pilot collided around 4:50 p.m. on Sunday at the intersection of Rockhouse Road and Highway 67 near Ramona.

According to CHP, the driver of the Honda reportedly entered the northbound lane of Hwy 67 from Rockhouse Road and stopped right in front of the motorcycle.

The rider and passenger of the motorcycle were thrown from the bike after colliding with the left side of the SUV, CHP reports. Both the 48-year-old Ramona man and 41-year-old woman passenger on the motorcycle were taken to the hospital with major injuries, and police report they were both wearing helmets.

The driver of the SUV -- a 54-year-old Poway man -- and his 12-year-old passenger were minorly injured in the collision.

“Failing to yield when entering the roadway is one of the leading causes of severe crashes,” said Captain Monteagudo. “A few extra seconds of caution can prevent tragedy. Always wait until it is safe; your safety and the safety of others depends on it.”

The collision is under investigation. CHP reports drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to be a factor.
