Macoupin Co. teen dies in farm accident: Sheriff
MACOUPIN COUNTY, Mo. - A teen passed away in a farm tractor accident in Virden, Illinois, on Tuesday.
The Macoupin County Sheriff's Department, the Virden Police Department and other first responders were alerted to the incident around 11 a.m.
Upon their arrival at the farm, officials discovered 16-year-old Nolan Kiel of Virden, Illinois, deceased at the scene.
According to investigators at the sheriff's department, Kiel was the operator of the tractor. An autopsy surrounding the teen's death was conducted on Aug. 13, and preliminary reports from the Macoupin County Coroner's Office suggest that Kiel died from asphyxiation.
The school the teen attended, North Mac Community Unit School District, released a statement online regarding Kiel's passing.
"Nolan will be remembered by the North Mac community as always possessing a positive attitude and friendly demeanor. North Mac schools will have counselors on hand today at the High School Media Center until 4 p.m., at the Middle School Library from 2-4 p.m. and as needed when students return on Monday. Please keep the Kiel family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this time of grief," the district wrote.
The school plans to host a candlelight vigil in honor of Kiel, who was a varsity soccer player.
The Macoupin County Sheriff's Department and coroner's office are still investigating the fatal accident.
