Local Jewish community reacts to Yom Kippur attack

ST. LOUIS - An attack during Yom Kippur services in the UK left two people dead and four injured when an assailant drove into worshippers and stabbed others before being shot and killed by police.

Officials in the UK are treating the incident as an act of terrorism, highlighting the ongoing threat of violence against religious communities.

The attack in the UK occurred on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur, a time when Jewish communities gather for prayer and reflection.

Jewish congregations in St. Louis, including the Shir Hadash Reconstructionist Community, who are coming together following the global rise in antisemitic incidents.

“We do this together as a community so we can really support each other and I think it’s something powerful about singing together that kind of diminishes the fear that’s real for Jews right now," said Rabbi Shira Singlenberg, a member of the Shir Hadash Reconstructionist Community.

St. Louis Jewish leaders are prioritizing security partnerships with law enforcement to ensure the safety of their congregations during the holiday season.

“They have full time security during our services both outside and inside the building in case something would occur. Also we have someone at the security desk who only lets people in that are registered for our services," said Robert Kodner, president of the Shir Hadash Reconstructionist Community.

The rise in antisemitic incidents worldwide is alarming, with over 2,100 documented in just the first four months of 2025, putting the year on track to break records.

Despite the increase in hate crimes, the Jewish community remains committed to coming together in faith and unity.

“I feel bad for what’s happening to all communities throughout the world not just the Jewish community. I think we have that responsibility to try to improve that situation," said Jeff Solomon a member of the Shir Hadash Reconstructionist Community.
