Live updates: Trump tells UN 'your countries are going to hell' over immigration

President Trump addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday morning, outlining his “America First” agenda to the global body for the first time in his second term.

Trump touted his role in ending seven global conflicts, but questioned the purpose of the United Nations in his remarks. He also railed against member countries over unchecked migration.

“When your prisons are filled with so-called asylum-seekers … it’s time to end the failed experiment of open borders,” Trump said. “You have to end it now. I can tell you. I’m really good at this stuff. Your countries are going to hell.”

The president will hold bilateral meetings with U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as leaders from Argentina and the European Union, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Monday. He also plans to hold a multilateral meeting with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey and Pakistan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.

In Arizona on Tuesday, a special election to fill the 7th Congressional District seat once filled by the late Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) is expected to give Democrats one more vote in the House.

Congress has one week to avert a shutdown when it runs out of funding Oct. 1. On Tuesday morning, Trump canceled a White House meeting set for later this week with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) over the situation.
