Journey to Atlantis water coaster reopens at SeaWorld San Diego
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A fan-favorite attraction at SeaWorld San Diego returns this weekend with new elements and a thrilling new storyline.
The revamped "Journey to Atlantis" water coaster promises a fresh experience for both longtime fans and first-time riders.
The attraction first opened in 2004 as the first water coaster in San Diego. Now, the reimagined coaster is expected to feature a completely different narrative along with a new immersive experience for riders.
Journey to Atlantis follows a crew called the S.E.A. (Science. Exploration. Adventure.) Collective as they try to uncover the secrets of the underwater world of Atlantis in Mission Bay.
As guests travel through the queue, they can see expedition maps and references to the mythical sea monster, the Kraken, who has awakened from its slumber and is preparing to strike Atlantis.
The storyline follows three chapters: Discovery, Descent and Escape.
During Discovery, guests will learn about the S.E.A. Collective's research as well as the mermaids and Atlanteans who protect the city. In Descent, people will board an eight-seater boat to take a tour of Atlantis before they come face-to-face with the Kraken, an experience made possible with the help of projection, lighting and dramatic water effects.

In the last chapter, Escape, riders will go on a vertical lift before they take a heart-pounding drop down into a splash pool, completing their journey.
Guests must meet the height requirement of 42 inches, or 3.5 feet, to go on the ride. The Journey to Atlantis officially opens to the public on Saturday, Aug. 23.
