Independent Russian media outlets say over 350,000 soldiers have been killed in war in Ukraine

The total number of Russian military personnel who have been killed since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine stood at 352,000 at the end of 2025, according to a joint study by two Russian media outlets.

Details: The journalists used lists of identified fatalities compiled by Mediazona together with BBC News Russian, as well as data from Russia's Probate Registry.

This figure includes not only those officially recognised as killed – 261,000 people – but also those declared missing in action by court rulings, meaning cases where no body was found – around 90,000.

The journalists stressed that they did not include foreign nationals who fought on the side of the Russian Armed Forces.

Background: According to Ukraine's General Staff, Russian losses as of the end of 2025 stood at over 1.2 million (killed and wounded).
