In-home daycare provider accused of slapping 2-year-old
WENTZVILLE, Mo. – A woman running a daycare out of her home is accused of endangering the welfare of a child.
Prosecutors say Julie Ratica has operated an in-home daycare in the Wentzville area for a couple of years.
"This was a child that she watched only recently started watching her and the child wouldn't quit crying, so she got a little physical with it," St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney Joe McCulloch said.
The probable cause statement says Ratica picked a two-year-old up by the upper arms and threw them down on their back in a pack and play. Then, it says she slapped the child in the face with such force that caused a loud slapping sound. And yelled at the child to "shut up." McCulloch says it was all caught on camera.
Court documents say Ratica was caring for children, which ranged from 1-3 years.
When police showed up to execute a search warrant, another mom was there inquiring about childcare. Ratica's been arrested. The prosecutor’s office says the daycare is unlicensed.
"Luckily, somebody reported it to the child abuse hotline, otherwise we wouldn't have known about this. She runs it by herself," McCulloch said.
Ratica's attorney did not return a call and e-mail from FOX 2 News at the time of this publication. No one came to the door when FOX 2 went to the house. Investigators wrote that Ratica said she knew what she did was wrong and that she lost her patience when the child was crying and would not take a nap.
She is currently being held on a $25,000 cash-only bond.
