Illinois father charged in 14-year-old daughter’s shooting death
WATERLOO, Ill. – More than six weeks after an Illinois girl was fatally wounded at a business in Waterloo, authorities have filed charges against two people for her death.
According to Sgt. Justin Biggs, a Monroe County Sheriff’s Department spokesman, deputies and EMS responded to a home in the 5900 block of State Route 3 on the afternoon of July 21.
Deputies arrived to find Emma Schultheis suffering from a gunshot wound. Schultheis was rushed to a St. Louis-area hospital, but she later succumbed to her injuries. She was 14.
The Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit assisted the sheriff’s department in its investigation. On Aug. 26, the sheriff’s department submitted its findings to the county prosecutor.
Investigators believe Emma’s father, David A. Schultheis, 34, fired a Taurus .40 caliber pistol at a buzzard that had entered a brick building. David only stuck his arm into the room and kept his head outside the doorway to avoid a possible ricochet.
The bullet struck the buzzard, passed through the bird, exited a window, and struck Emma, who was outside.
The Monroe County State’s Attorney’s Office charged David Schultheis with reckless discharge of a firearm and Karen A. Schwarze, 58, with obstructing justice and concealment of a homicidal death.
Prosecutors allege Schwarze hid the pistol and attempted to dissuade others not to speak with law enforcement in the early stages of the investigation.
David Schultheis turned himself in at the Monroe County Jail. Authorities are awaiting Schwarze to surrender herself to the county sheriff in the near future.
