Illinois begins fourth round of $4,000 EV rebates, starting October 2025
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — Despite the end of the federal tax credit on the purchase of electric vehicles, Illinois is offering a fourth round of $4,000 rebates on eligible EVs.
The newest round opens on October 28th, 2025, and runs until January 31st, 2026, or until funding is exhausted.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has appropriated $14 million to give to eligible applicants, beginning with a $2,000 rebate to a new or used electric car, or a $1,500 rebate for an electric motorcycle. Low-income residents, who earn less than 80% of an individual county's low-income threshold, can earn another $2,000 rebate, bringing the available total to $4,000.
Eligible vehicles must have a selling price of less than $80,000 and not have been used for a rebate in any of the prior rebate cycles (the IEPA uses a VIN number to track previously issued rebates).
Additionally, the vehicle must be sold by a dealership licensed by the Illinois Secretary of State, and the applicant must not have received a prior Illinois EV rebate.
In 2025, Illinois awarded 3,500 EV rebates. In 2024, the program awarded 3,000. In the first year of the program, 2023, with a larger appropriation, the IEPA sent out 4,872 EV rebates.
Applications can be found on the IEPA's Electric Vehicle Rebate Program website and must be filed within 180 days of the purchase date.
A federal tax credit, which supplied up to $7,500 toward the purchase of an EV, comes to an end on September 30th, 2025.
As of September 2025, there are 152,106 registered EVs in Illinois. Gov. JB Pritzker had previously set a goal of having 1 million clean energy vehicles on the roads by 2030.
