KAMPALA – Speaker of Parliament Anita Among delivered one of her most emphatic political statements yet during a high-level gathering of legislators, likening herself to a jigger embedded in the foot of the ruling establishment as she dismissed criticism over her past opposition ties.

The remarks were made at a Members of Parliament dinner organised by Michael Nuwagira, Vice Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), held at Protea Hotel Skyz ahead of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s 52nd birthday run.

In a video clip that has since circulated widely, Among reaffirmed her allegiance to the National Resistance Movement (NRM), stressing that her political future remains firmly anchored within the party.

“They say I came from FDC; I am now in the ruling party and firmly grounded in it. I am like a jigger… I came from humble beginnings like grass, and I am going nowhere,” she said.

Her comments appeared directed at critics who continue to question her transition from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) to one of the most powerful offices in Uganda’s political system.

Among went further to signal readiness to align with PLU, stating: “If they tell us to shift to PLU, I will run faster than anybody,” a remark that drew attention given the growing visibility of the platform within political circles.

The dinner formed part of a broader series of activities marking Gen. Muhoozi’s birthday, which have recently resumed after a brief lull. The celebrations—ranging from charity runs to elite networking events—have attracted a cross-section of political leaders, particularly from within the NRM.

In a subsequent post on her official X account, Rt Hon Among described the dinner as a “wonderful evening,” praising Gen. Muhoozi’s “lifelong dedication to serving our nation” and thanking Members of Parliament and organisers for their participation. She also wished participants success in the upcoming “run for hope,” framed as a charitable initiative to support vulnerable communities.

The resurgence of the birthday celebrations has generated significant debate on social media platforms. Supporters portray the events as patriotic and youth-driven, while critics question their political undertones and implications for Uganda’s future leadership dynamics.

Analysts say Among’s remarks at the event underscore a broader trend of public loyalty signaling among senior leaders at a time when internal alignments within the ruling party continue to evolve.
