How to keep your pet safe during emergencies
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — In recognition of September being National Preparedness Month, the San Diego Humane Society provided tips on how to keep your pets safe during natural disasters.
If pet owners do not have an emergency plan in place natural disasters like earthquakes, flooding, or wildfire can put pets, their owners and even first responders in danger, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
“Our pets can’t plan for emergencies — that’s our job,” President and CEO of San Diego Humane Society Dr. Gary Weitzman said in a news release. “A little preparation now can save their lives when every second counts.”

The San Diego Humane Society is recommending these tips to help keep you and your pet prepared:
- Make a pet emergency kit, packed with at least two weeks of food, water and medication
- Include toys, vet contact information, vaccine records and a water saucer in your emergency kit
- Help your pets get comfortable being in crates or carriers
- Be aware of your pets hiding spots when they are sacred
- For those with large animals, such a livestock, keep a trailer ready
- Never leave animals behind
- Ensure all pets have a form of identification such as collars, ID tags and microchips
- Make a backup plan by finding a neighbor or someone nearby who can help assist your pet if you are not nearby
“By taking these steps now, you can ensure your pets have the best chance of staying safe, calm and with you — no matter what disaster comes our way,” the San Diego Humane Society stated.
