House CR to be released Tuesday, GOP leaders say, setting up Friday vote
House GOP leaders said they plan to release a stopgap funding bill after a Republican conference meeting Tuesday, setting up a Friday vote on the short-term punt.
Majority Leader Steve Scalise said Tuesday morning that text of the continuing resolution through Nov. 20 would be released “hopefully” after the 9 a.m. GOP meeting. Speaker Mike Johnson said in a brief subsequent interview that he expects to release text later in the day.
A House vote Friday “is the plan,” Johnson said.
Responding to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, GOP leaders are planning to add funding for member security in the stopgap. Johnson told House Republicans in their closed-door meeting that he plans a $32 million boost for in-district security details, according to three people granted anonymity to describe the private meeting.
Rep. Bryan Steil (R-Wis.), who chairs the House Administration Committee, said lawmakers have become "more and more interested in the programs that are already available" over the past year, even before Kirk's killing.
The $32 million would beef up a program allowing members to request security though partnerships between the Capitol Police and local law enforcement agencies. A separate pilot program allowing members to hire private security is slated to end later this month, but Steil said the House "can always look at reappropriating currently available funds" to continue it.
