Hotter weather and the return of the monsoon to San Diego County

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- When it comes to hot summer weather and monsoon season in Southern California, it has been quiet, until now.

A heat dome over the Four Corners region is building and expanding which will crank up afternoon temperatures and allow for an influx of tropical moisture for the rest of this week.

Tuesday and Wednesday are the days we will start to feel the temperatures increase and continue increasing into the weekend. The clockwise circulation around the area of high pressure will draw in subtropical moisture from Baja California and Mexico and finally bring monsoon weather to the region.

This seasonal reversal of winds is typical this time of year with the classic set up of the heat dome to our northeast, but it has been a drier than normal summer for most of us in the West.

The monsoon season locally runs until September and brings increased humidity as well as thunderstorms mainly for the mountains and deserts, but a few could drift west of the mountains for Thursday and Friday.

Daytime highs will climb to right above seasonal averages with upper 70's on tap for the beaches, upper 90's for the valleys and mountains and up to 115 degrees for the deserts.

An Extreme Heat Watch goes into effect for almost all areas east of Interstate 5 Thursday morning lasting through Friday evening.

Dangerously hot conditions and an increased heat risk are expected for these areas so drink plenty of water, wear loose fitting clothing and hang out in the shade when you can.
