According to the San Diego Police Department, the crash happened along the 15000 block of Carmel Valley Road, where a gray Honda Civic traveling eastbound reportedly lost control after drifting onto the south sidewalk at a high rate of speed.

Police say the Civic then veered back across the eastbound lanes and struck a tree in the center median before continuing across the westbound lanes. The vehicle ultimately collided with a white Honda Accord that was headed westbound in the right lane, driven by an 18-year-old male. The force of the impact caused the Civic’s driver to be ejected from the vehicle.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported both drivers to a nearby hospital. The 19-year-old Civic driver sustained life-threatening brain injuries and multiple fractures, police said. The condition of the 18-year-old Accord driver has not been publicly released.

Investigators from the SDPD’s Traffic Division responded to the scene and are actively investigating the circumstances of the crash. Police confirmed that alcohol was a factor in the collision.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Traffic Division or call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
