High School baseball coach accused of drug trafficking: Feds

ST. LOUIS - A high school baseball coach from Illinois is facing heavy accusations in regard to drug trafficking.

Court records say Demetrius Combs, 33, of Sauget, Illinois, was indicted in St. Louis’ U.S. District Court on Aug. 27 to these following charges:

  • 1X of distribution of fentanyl
  • 2X of distribution of methamphetamine
  • 1X of possession with intent to distribute in excess of 400 grams of fentanyl
  • 1X of possession with intent to distribute in excess of 500 grams of methamphetamine
  • 1X of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime

According to the federal indictment, Combs conducted these drug sales between June and August 2023.

In a motion to keep the 33-year-old in custody until trial, federal prosecuting attorneys say an undercover officer with the St. Louis County Police Department (SLCPD) purchased fentanyl and meth from Combs on separate occasions.

During a court-approved search at the defendant’s residence, officers say they found $3,746 in cash, as well as capsules containing fentanyl that were in Combs’ possession.

“In his car, police found a pistol, three cell phones and more capsules containing fentanyl. In his home they found multiple firearms, two cell phones, thousands of dollars in cash, a pill press, fentanyl, meth and drug paraphernalia. One of the handguns was equipped with an auto sear or “switch” that converted it into a fully automatic weapon,” the motion states.

Court records say Combs was arrested on Sept. 25 and has pleaded not guilty.
