Gun found at Belleville West High School, student in custody
BELLEVILLE, Ill. - A student was taken into custody Tuesday after a gun was found at Belleville West High School, police say.
Around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, a Belleville Police Department School Resource Officer and Belleville West High School staff were notified that a student at the high school was possibly in possession of a gun.
After that, police separated the student from others and conducted a search. A school resource officer located and seized one gun.
The student was promptly taken into custody by the Belleville Police Department.
"The safety of the students and staff was of the highest priority. When the initial report was received, the Belleville Police Department and Belleville West High School staff acted swiftly to isolate the student and bring a safe resolution to the incident. At this time, there is no known threat that has been made to any staff or students, and it is believed to be an isolated incident. The investigation is ongoing," said the Belleville Police Department in a statement to FOX 2.
Police say a student reported the situation. No injuries were reported, while the student in possession of the gun was taken into custody.
