Granite City man charged in road rage shooting

ST. LOUIS – A Granite City, Illinois, man appeared in court Monday afternoon to face charges for road rage shooting over the summer.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, the shooting happened on July 21.

The victim told police he was driving his Chevrolet Silverado when a red truck began tailgating him. The victim said he tried to turn onto Interstate 70 when the red truck passed him. As the red truck passed, the driver fired a shot at the victim’s vehicle.

When the victim got home, he found his Silverado had been struck by a bullet.

Police said the victim’s Silverado was equipped with a dashboard camera, which recorded the shooting.

Investigators used license plate readers and business surveillance videos to identify the driver as Richard Lehmkuhl.

Police eventually interviewed Lehmkuhl, who denied any involvement in the shooting. After being shown video of the shooting, police said Lehmkuhl confessed and showed officers the red truck he was driving and the firearm used in the shooting.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Lehmkhul, 63, with first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action.
