Grand Jury indictment reveals more about daycare death
PARK HILLS, Mo. - For the first time, an official legal document states that 3-year-old Conrad Ashcraft died by asphyxiation while at a Park Hills daycare.
Danielle Love, trying not to lose hope for justice in the death of her cousin Conrad, who passed away on May 16, was elated when an indictment came down late Thursday.
"I'm still getting goosebumps talking about it. I am so happy that something has finally started this process and we're starting to see a little bit of justice happen," Love said.
Tiffany Hedrick, 40, one of Poppy's Playhouse 2's employees, is charged with abuse or neglect of a child resulting in death, armed criminal action and second-degree murder.
"I think the help of the community and everybody getting the name out there and getting the message out there has helped tremendously," Love said.
The indictment says Hedrick neglected Conrad by placing and leaving him face down under a weighted blanket with his arms immobilized. It also claims that those actions caused Conrad to die by asphyxiation.
"He deserves every bit of justice like any child would," family friend Crystal McWilliams said.
McWilliams is one of the people who have painted Conrad's name all over town.
"It's the first step in a long process that we have to go through now but the community is ready," she said.
But some are still calling for more arrests after a state licensing inspection revealed Conrad was left under that weighted blanket for four hours, with no one checking on him.
"We're not done until we see more arrests, and even then, I don't know if we're done," Love said.
Hedrick's initial court appearance was scheduled for Friday afternoon. She is being represented by Scott Rosenblum.
Rosenblum has told FOX 2 that they have entered a not guilty plea.
