Germany sees window of opportunity for EU dialogue with Russia on ending war – Reuters

Germany has said a window of opportunity is gradually opening for dialogue between Russia and Europe on ending the war, but only in full coordination with Ukraine.

Details: The official stressed that Europeans could initiate dialogue with Russia provided it involved a format that European countries regarded as legitimate and effective.

He added that there are strong indications that the E3 group, which includes Germany, France and the UK, will continue to play an important role in this issue.

The official said recent military developments suggest that the process of dialogue with Russia is likely to take months rather than weeks. The key point, he stressed, is ensuring that it takes place with Ukraine's full consent.

Coordination with the United States, whose mediated talks have reached an impasse as Washington focuses on Iran, must also remain a guiding principle, the German official added.

Background:

  • Germany and European governments rejected a proposal by Russian ruler Vladimir Putin that former German chancellor Gerhard Schröder could represent them in possible future talks with Moscow.
  • Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, pointed out that in discussing a possible EU negotiator, the union should not fall into Russia's trap by accepting a candidate most convenient for Moscow.
  • Earlier reports suggested the European Union was considering former German chancellor Angela Merkel, former Italian prime minister Mario Draghi and Finnish President Alexander Stubb as potential EU negotiators.
