Gateway Cup returns this Labor Day weekend

ST. LOUIS - It's a St. Louis tradition, and the Gateway Cup is returning this Labor Day weekend.

This cup features four days of races and the return of the Three Stooges.

“And they’ll look up and go, ‘Oh my gosh look at that the Three Stooges,’” said Randy Liebler, Gateway Cup & Three Stooge’s Fan. “If I catch them doing that, I’m glad they noticed.”

Retired member of the KPLR creative services team, Randy Liebler, saved the Stooges and gave them a new roost for Saturday’s race.

Friday afternoon in Lafayette Square, racers made their way around the first part of the four-day Bommarito Audi West County Gateway Cup.

“I’ve seen around this park that it looks like children have made special posters for the racers,” said Bob Duffy, racer from Portland. “That’s something really unique to this race to see how the community gets involved in it.”

St. Louisans will have a chance to see parts of St. Louis in a new way, as the cup on Saturday will be in Francis Park, and the following day, it will be at the Hill. On Monday, it will be in Florissant.

And you don’t need three knuckleheads to tell you that.

“You know I get to stare at them all day,” said Liebler. “But to share them with other stooges and Stooges fans, I think it’s great. That’s a good thing.”
